CHEVETTE

Summer came in April
In nineteen eighty two
Rolled across Cheshire
We sat exams in t-shirts
We drank beer in shorts
Holding under pressure
But Paul left school in late December
He’d got bigger plans
Paul got a job in Runcorn
He learned to point and set
Paul bought a red Vauxhall Chevette

Massive silver spoilers
Tape and stereo
Graphic equalizers
He’d got off site in Fridays, and he’d
Drive right up to school
Dying to surprise us
And he’d blast his two-tone car horn
Open wide his doors
I can’t see you lot walking
Just because you’re not earning yet
Paul had a red Vauxhall Chevette

And how we sat and tried not to show we were impressed
Paul was on his way
We were passengers
Paul was on his way

One of us got married
Few years after that
We dreaded all returning
We all had cars now
We all had stereos
Fruits of all that learning
Then we heard this two-tone car horn
Raised our eyes and turned
To see a red Mercedes
Door pushed open wide
Name of a building business on the side
I can’t see you guys driving round
In those god-awful cars
Step in boys and travel like stars
We drove around town for hours
Recalled the girls we’d met
Recalled the red Vauxhall Chevette

LATHAM AVENUE

Someone told him
Every night she
Took the same roads home
Walked with friends to
Latham Avenue
Then on alone
And oh this was the only opportunity he knew
This was the time, but most of all
This was the girl he knew
1992
Latham Avenue

By the bus stop
Near the shop, she
Trips and drops here things
Looking up he
Sees the opportunity this brings
They sit and talk of nothing that means anything at all
On the street sign by the wall
Both their names they drew
1992
Latham Avenue

And he came through the door and sat in the hall
On the chair that was just meant for show
And he stared at the floor, with his mind rewinding
The moment she told him that yes, she’d go

Ten years later
Walking home, she trips and drops her things
Looking round, he
Frowns at the attention that this brings
They walk
And talk of nothing that means anything at all
Not noticing the street sign
And all the things they drew
in 1992
On Latham Avenue

HARMLESS FLIRTING

He said ‘Moonlight’
Out in the moonlight
She laughed
‘I can show you
five constellations’
She laughed
Like he made her laugh so hard
The time he got them all lost on Spain
The time he barbecues in the rain

It was just one kiss
Harmless flirting
Just one time
Cross the line
Start the hurting
Just one kiss. One night

‘Someone down there?’
Voice by the kitchen
They laugh
‘I’m just showing
Your wife I know the stars’
They laugh
Like they always laughed so hard
Walking in with coal at New year
Racing all their kids down the pier

It was just one kiss
Harmless flirting
Just one time
Cross the line
Start the hurting
Just one kiss

And oh, the laughter goes on
But oh how different it sounds from now on

A little swill of cheap Cotes-de-Beaune
But she can still taste his Cologne

It was just one kiss
Harmless flirting
Just one time
Cross the line
Start the hurting
Just one kiss
One night

ENGLISH LOVE SONG

I discover new wisdom
Every year that goes by
But I only learn
How much I knew already
And the stones I turn
Have all been turned already

So take this English love song
Whiter than Dover, deep as Durham coal
So take my English love song
Proud as the millstone, endless as the roll
Of Norfolk cloud
Or Cornish sea
Sweet as the heather

I acquire possession
From the money I earn
But the things I buy
Could all be bought by others
And the day I die
Will give their love to others

So take this English love song
Whiter than Dover, deep as Durham coal
So take my English love song
Proud as the millstone, endless as the roll
Of Norfolk cloud
Or Cornish sea
Sweet as the heather

KEEN ON CARS

Never get keen on cars
Don’t take your friends on holiday
Never keep milk more than four days
Never drink screw top wine
Never talk down to waitresses
Never trust men who cannot praise
Shops that say ‘quality’
Sadly will rarely be
These are the things I have to give you for certain

Never ever press your jeans
Don’t say ‘bonjour’ in Portugal
Or save a fortune you won’t spend
Never cook fish too long
Always regard suspiciously
People with twenty two best friends
Learn to play guitar
Find where the Maldives are
These are the only things that I know
For certain

Should you fall in love?
Should you stay or leave?
I can’t help you with these things
Should you fall in love?
Should you still believe?
I can’t help you

Never wear amusing ties
Steer clear of all astrology
Don’t give your kids outrageous names
Don’t be afraid to cry
Never be proud of doing well
Just ‘cause you’re good at video games
Know where the Maldives are
Learn how to play guitar
These are the only things that I know
For certain

LAST MAN STANDING

I know there will be silence
I know there will be pain
I know there’ll be things I can’t explain
Damage on the highway
Debris on the line
I know we’ll hit turbulence some time
And I know………..

I will not be the last man standing
I am not a man who would be king
Please don’t hold out for a hero
I can’t be that thing
But what I am I lay before you
And I know I have no need to lie
The kind of girl who needs a hero
Just keep walking by

I’d promise you protection
Security and calm
(But) I know I’m the one who’ll cause the most harm
I’d say I’ll never hurt you
No matter how I try
(But) I know I’ll find ways to make you cry
And I………

I will not be the last man standing
I am not a man who would be king
Please don’t hold out for a hero
I can’t be that thing
But what I am I lay before you
And I know I have no need to lie
The kind of girl who needs a hero
Just keep walking by

And I’d like to pretend
In the end
You will not have half of what I could be
But all of what I am
Sometimes I won’t say things
Things I really mean
Leave you to guess what might have been
And I

I will not be the last man standing
I am not a man who would be king
Please don’t hold out for a hero
I can’t be that thing
But what I am I lay before you
And I know I have no need to lie
The kind of girl who needs a hero
Just keep walking by

SOMETIME IN JULY

Sometime in July
She sat watching the ball game
When the settee
Began calling her man’s name
Something she’d leaned on had redialled last number rung
Called up this girl who didn’t seemed at all surprised
Just young
Round about twelve
He’s home, humming some theme tune
Meeting ran late
Quick drink down in the Half Moon
She’s doing a stocktake of the times he might have lied
He opens the fridge and starts to move things round and round
Inside

Two forty five someone outside gets in a car
She feels him an inch away in bed
But now not sure how far
Round about four
She knows how late her street’s lit
Wanders downstairs
Makes toast but never eats it
She watches the news from last night’s markets in Japan
Turning the phone just like a rolling stone around her hand
Breakfast at eight
Big smiles. He’s talking big talk
We never do much weekends. How about New York?
She folds up a teatowel
Quietly says that sounds like fun
Wondering why he’s now begun to want to do
Things he
Has never done

I COULD REALLY DO WITHOUT THIS NOW

I could really do without this now
I’ve got things to do for Monday
I told the kids I’d take them all
To the basketball
There’s a page I’ve got to write
I’ve booked the flights for Barcelona
Paul is coming home
From university

And so you see
It’s just not me
To wind up turned out upside down
And going crazy
Baby
Using words like baby
Baby

I could really do without this now
I have no room for complications
I was not looking at the stars
I’m not that kind of man
I’ve got promises to keep
I’m losing sleep and concentration
Acting like I’m seventeen
And in the clouds again

And so you see
It’s just not me
To wind up turned out upside down
And going crazy
Baby
Using words like baby
Baby

So I could do
Now without you
Filling up my head, my heart
And making me go crazy baby
Making me go crazy baby
Using words like baby
Crazy

SAME THING TWICE

Please stop me if I start to get old
If I start to dress according to the weather
Tell me if you find me blindly doing what I’m told
By some patronising middle aged receptionist called Heather

And if you find they’ve got to know me in the doctors
Please give me immediate advice
Always tell me if I start to say the same thing twice

Let me know the day that I stop talking loud in pubs
Or start to make a loud noise when I’m drinking
Tell me if I’ve started keeping empty margarine tubs
Or start to read the papers to find out what I’m thinking
And if I smell of anything, and by this I mean absolutely
Anything at all that isn’t nice
Always tell me if I start to say the same thing twice

But most of all, please take me on one side if I ever
Start saying things that aren’t what they used to be
That the jokes are not as funny now, the kids are not as clever
That once there was a time when you were more in love with me
Help me feel the same but not care if I don’t
Tell me if I say the same thing twice
And also tell me if I start to say the same thing twice

Please stop me if I start to get old
If I start to dress according to the weather
Tell me if you find me blindly doing what I’m told
By some patronising middle aged receptionist called Heather
Help me the same but not care if I don’t
Tell me if I say the same thing twice
And also tell me if I start to say the same thing twice

GIRL FROM BEFORE

People said they saw angels on the underground
Doves all over Devon
People said in casinos down in London Town
Dice all came up seven

And in a café in Manchester
A girl turned round and the sun caught her hair

There were lights in the sky above Northumbria
Milton Keynes had visitations
There were mermaids in the seven lakes of Cumbria
York had unexplained vibrations

And in a cafe in Manchester
You turned around and I
Suddenly saw
That this was the girl from before
Still here after all of these years
That girl who had made my heart soar
Here’s to the girl from before

It might just take a day of magic
A trick of light from skies above
A slight of hand to brush the sound
That time will push across
Faces that we love

Coast to coast from Merseyside to Humberside
Not an oath was spoken
No toast was landing on the honey side
Eggs poached unbroken

And in a café in Manchester
A guy worked out that the more that he’d looked
The less that he saw of the girl
Still here after all of these years
That girl who had made his heart soar
Here’s to the girl from before

JENNIFER FALLS

She fell in love with Dave
When she was just eighteen
Dave had Motorbikes
He kept a clean machine
And she held on
But when she called he could not hear her
Jennifer falls in love with men
Every time Jennifer’s in love
She falls again
And again
And

She fell in love with Steve
When she was twenty one
Steve had birds of prey
They made him feel strong
She should have flown
But would return for scraps he threw her

Jennifer falls in love with men
Jennifer falls in love with men
Everytime Jennifer’s in love, she falls again

She fell in love with Carl
When she was thirty two
Karl did DIY
Stripped out the old, put in the new
He hit her once
And put their love beyond repairing

Jennifer falls in love with men
Jennifer falls in love with men
Everytime Jennifer’s in love, she falls again

And all her friends see it coming
They hear the same song
None of them speak in case this time they’re wrong

She fell in love with Al
When she was thirty five
Alistair taught maths
He’d had two other wives
And Jennifer
Too late learned how to read statistics

Jennifer falls in love with men
Jennifer falls in love with men
Wondering if it’s her or them
Everytime Jennifer’s in love, she falls again

BOOK OF STORIES

God has given us a book full of stories
That he read to his children of old
It begins with a tale in a garden
And it ends with a city of gold

You read me all the stories
Before you laid me down
You’d pay any fare
That would get me there
Help me reach that golden town

When the day that he gave you is ended
And the dark falls at his behest
All your prayers in the morning ascended
And his praise sanctifies your rest
I hope he keeps his promise
I hope he makes it pay
And that he won’t let anyone regret
Any sun lost on the way

In the bleakest of all the midwinters
When the frost on the wind has made moan
When the earth lies as hard as iron
And the water lies hard as a stone
I hope they hear this prayer then
From your child of old
If his teller fails to convince with tales
She still gets that town of gold
